Abstract

The present study aimed to analyze the relationship between perceived social support, depressive symptomatology, and the clinical risk of developing pressure ulcers (PUs) in institutionalized older adults. A quantitative, cross-sectional, and correlational design was applied, utilizing a sample of 135 older adults residing in geriatric centers in Imbabura. The instruments used were the Norton Scale to classify the risk of Pressure Ulcers (PUs), the Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support-12 (EMAS-12) to measure social support, and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) to evaluate depressive symptomatology. Among the main findings, 60% of the older adults exhibited some level of depression. Social support was negatively correlated with depression (r = –0.731; p < 0.01) and positively correlated with the Norton scale score (r = 0.497; p < 0.01). The results suggest the necessity of comprehensive care that promotes psychosocial well-being and the clinical prevention of PUs in institutionalized older adults.
